A group of pilots and gliding enthusiasts began clearing the area in 1971. In 1972 the clearing was extended and the first hangar was built. The Gold Coast City Council purchased the land in 1978 as a buffer zone around the sewerage treatment works. The land was purchased by council with a State Government grant of 40% of the cost. the grant was provided on the condition that the land was used for Municipal purposes only, not for commercial purposes. this resulted in the signing of our 50 year lease which expires in 2037……..
Membership:
Ordinary or Social membership is available by nomination. Ordinary membership requires the payment of a levy, General aviation license and annual subscription, which entitles the member to full use of club facilities and flying rights in accordance with Club By-laws. These entitlements include being eligible to apply for approval to house and operate an aircraft at Mason Field, purchase or rent a hangar (if available) and access to fuel and maintenance facilities and access to the Club Insurance Policy. Social Membership requires the payment of a nomination fee and annual subscription. This enables the member to be involved and enjoy social activities at the club. Flying Rights for social members are provided for in BY-Law #7 and limited to a member of the family of an ordinary member.
Where we are today:
What was swamp land has been converted by Club Members substantial physical and financial effort to produce the existing CASA registered aerodrome. Visitors are always impressed and often comment on what they see on their initial visit to the club. Everey member can be proud of being a member of the Southport Flying Club. The whole facility has been developed entirely through members contributions. We are totaly self funded, financially sound and receive no government grants or subsidies from council.
Flying Club Facilities:
Our clubrooms are situated on the airfield and have great views in all directions, the club has up to date modern facilities in which we encourage all new and existing members to share in its benifits. Situated near the club house is a modern maintenance organization, staffed with extremely capable engineers who can carry out all required servicing to both fixed and rotary wing aircraft including those turbine equipped.
Various functions throughout the year, such as the annual safari, BBQ’s, mini safaris and other catered functions provide regular opportunities for camaraderie and making new friends.
The Club has a swipe card fueling system dispensing both avgas and avtur to its members The Airstrip is a bitumen sealed all weather runway.
